The critically-acclaimed TENG Ensemble presents the new sound of Chinese instruments through musical experimentation. The 8-member ensemble re-invents familiar Chinese instrumental music by blending it with modern influences, to broaden the appeal of Chinese music and take it beyond cultural boundaries.
Since their inception in 2005, they have been invited to perform at prestigious events such as the Gardens By the Bay 1st Anniversary Celebrations (2013), 5th ASEAN Culture & Arts Ministerial Meeting (2012), Esplanade's National Day Celebrations (2012), 11th World Chinese Entrepreneurs Convention (2011), Singapore HeritageFest (2011), Shanghai World Expo (2010), Youth Olympic Games (2010) and Singapore Night Festival (2009), among others.
Celebrating The TENG Company’s eighth anniversary, The TENG Ensemble's debut album 八 Eight features eight tracks that draw references to diverse music styles and various genres of popular music such as film, TV, anime, electronica and soft rock. All tracks were composed by Composer-In-Residence Lim Yi Benjamin and their line-up includes Phua Ee Kia (Vocal), Patrick Ngo (Yangqin), Darrel Xin (Erhu), Johnny Chia (Guzheng), Gerald Teo (Cello), Yang Ji Wei (Sheng), Dr Samuel Wong (Pipa) and Lim Yi Benjamin (Guitar).
The album took two years to prepare and the tracks were recorded in Singapore, and later mixed and mastered in the USA to ensure the highest sound quality. The ensemble’s music has been described by the media as follows: “While one cannot pinpoint the exact genre of the ensemble’s music, it stirs the heart of the listener, making them yearn for more” (translation from 联合早报 Lianhe Zaobao, Singapore, 2 March 2012). We believe this album will be the perfect antidote for consumers who are looking for modern Chinese instrumental music.
The TENG Ensemble will be having their concert end of this month on 28 Sept 2013 at Esplanade as part of the album launch. They will also be appearing on Channel News Asia, local radio stations and local newspaper.
